| Abstract | ||
| Abstract Among the wide range of literary and critical disciplines of literary works which emerged in early 20th c. was the psychoanalytical approach whose primary concern is the study and examination of literary and artistic products from psychological perspective. The novel Shazdeh Ehtejab (The Prince of Conquest) by the contemporary Iranian novelist Houshang Golshiri is the narration of despair and mental crises of the principal character of the novel, i.e. Shazdeh Ehtejab. In the characterization of the principal character, Golshiri utilizing the technique of stream of consciousness and delving into his ancestral memories of his Ghajari dynasty, dramatized such mental states as fear, inferiority, seclusion, isolation and love wish. The present research was in the light of Karen Hornay’s theory; since the psychoanalyst’s views are in accord with the case study of Shazdeh Ehtejab in terms of characterization. Hornay is one of Freud’s followers in the field of sociological psychoanalysis. The present research took advantage of content analysis method to analyze Shazdeh Ehtejab’s characterization. The results of the research demonstrated that Shazdeh Ehtejab is a psychotic character who for treatment of sense of inferiority, whose substantial part dates back to his childhood, bitter memories of his ancestors’ cruelty on other people, turned to a defense mechanism and isolation. To get rid of such feelings, he took refuge in reviewing those memories. Time in Shazdeh Ehtejab’s mind is chaotic and disorderly and this state of timelessness confronts the reader with the narrative disorder. | ||
