| This article explores the way urban experience is represented in Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Man of the Crowd” by bringing together the concept of the flâneur and Guy Debord’s notion of the dérive. Traditionally, the flâneur, associated with Charles Baudelaire and later discussed by Walter Benjamin, is as a detached observer who moves through the city while interpreting and classifying the phenomena he perceives. At the beginning of Poe’s story, the narrator seems to fit this role, self-assuredly reading the crowd from a distance. However, this position gradually becomes unstable when he encounters a mysterious old man whose presence resists interpretation. As the narrator begins to follow him, his detached gaze gives way to a more immersive and uncertain experience of the city. This shift can be read in light of Debord’s dérive, which emphasizes movement shaped by the environment rather than by intention or control. The article argues that Poe’s text moves from a sense of visual mastery toward a state of disorientation, revealing the limits of understanding in the modern urban setting. In doing so, it suggests that “The Man of the Crowd” anticipates later theories of urban experience by challenging the idea that the city can be fully ‘read’ or known. | ||
