| چکیده | ||
| Prompt engineering is increasingly used to structure learner responses, yet its pedagogical value in face-to-face English as a foreign language (EFL) discussion remains underexplored. This study examined whether systematically designed instructor prompts could improve Iranian EFL learners’ engagement and critical thinking disposition (CTD) during classroom group discussions. Fifty intermediate-level female learners were randomly assigned to a prompt-supported discussion group or a conventional discussion group and completed pretest and posttest measures before and after an 8-week intervention. Paired-samples t-tests indicated significant within-group improvement, whereas independent-samples t-tests showed significantly higher posttest engagement and CTD in the prompt-supported group. The findings are consistent with such prompts helping to organize participation and create conditions conducive to analytical and reflective engagement. By extending prompt engineering beyond predominantly human-AI interaction, the findings suggest that structured prompt design may serve as a pedagogically grounded resource for face-to-face EFL discussions that are both cognitively substantive and participatory. | ||
